Freelance Copywriter Buying Guide - How to Make a Smart Choice

If you do business on the web, then the quality of your sales copy can make or break your success.

While some business owners choose to learn the ins and outs of writing effective sales copy themselves, most of them would rather just pay someone else to do it.

That’s where a freelance copywriter comes into the picture. But here’s the problem: Not all freelance copywriters know what they’re doing. And even if they do, sometimes they just aren’t a good fit for your business.

So how can you make a smart choice when it comes to hiring someone to write the copy for your business?

Here are three things to keep in mind:

1. First Impressions are Everything

There are a lot of personalities in the freelance copywriting world. Some of the writers are friendly. Other writers have egos larger than New York State.

The important thing to remember is this, “How they do anything is how they do everything.”

So if you get some clue or feeling not to move forward with someone on your list of potential freelance copywriters, don’t ignore it.

2. It’s What Happens When Things Don’t Work Out That Really Matters

If a freelance copywriter sits down and puts together a sales letter that makes you a million dollars, you’re probably not going to be complaining.

But what happens when things don’t go so smoothly? What happens when the promotion converts worse than the copy you wrote yourself? (That happens all the time.) Then what is your copywriter saying?

If they blame the results on you or your business, that doesn’t really help you much at all.

When you’re interviewing a freelance copywriter, just be sure to ask them what happens when things don’t work out.

Their answer will tell you everything you need to know about how to move forward.

3. Understand There Are NO Guarantees

No freelance copywriter can guarantee you a certain level of results. If that’s what you’re looking for, the only takers you’ll find are writers so desperate, they’ll say anything to get your business.

Don’t make that mistake. If someone guarantees a certain result, that’s the first clue to run the other way. You won’t be sorry in the end.
