Typically, you don’t spend a quarter of your career on one side of the fence, having done very, very well, and look over at the other side and say to yourself…”boy, that grass really looks greener.”
But after 19 years on Madison Ave, writing ads you’ve seen and admired, that’s just what happened to me.
The allure of the direct marketing realm is totally understandable.
Why?
Because it is so quantifiable! Egads, did a copywriter just admit to a love of metrics?
Yes…and for good reason. The best direct marketing writers out there command insane money for their talents. Ungodly sums for several pages of copy. In fact, the top guys, and we know the names, make Wall Street numbers year after year.
They do this all based upon the fact that if their words are assembled in just the right ways, and if they hit the right psychological buttons and if their work builds toward the inevitable conclusion that the reader of that direct response pice MUST have that product…if all of those things come together…then that direct marketing/direct response writer is gold and he or she knows it.
What follows then is the ability to pick and choose the number it will take for their talents to be ‘bought.’
Traditional advertising, is hardly that way.
Creatives on Madison Avenue are rewarded NOT for selling ice cream or toe nail fungus removal systems, but in SELLING GREAT CREATIVE.
That great creative is how the ad agency sells itself to the next client.
HUGE, HUGE DIFFERENCE.
My love for direct response will not go away…because I know the power that it holds.
And in an online world where you can’t just niche yourself, you must micro-niche yourself, I have fallen, quite happily, into the micro-niche of the properly assembled autoresponder series.
In the direct marketing circles, nothing comes close.
Nothing.
